Picture this: I’m on a Zoom call, trying to sound professional when my daughter rushes in to tell me mom needs my help because her little brother pooped on the stairs! Sound familiar? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Since you’re taking the time to read this, our goal is to provide practical tips to help you balance your career and fatherhood without losing your sanity. Remember, finding this balance is crucial for both your well-being and that of your family.

TIP 1: MASTER THE ART OF SCHEDULING

Think of a well-organized schedule as your superhero utility belt – it’s essential for tackling anything life throws at you.

Advice: Use digital calendars and apps to keep track of both work meetings and family activities. I use Google Calendar to keep track of my meetings and events.

On one Friday morning, while at breakfast, I casually answered a call from a colleague who informed me I was late for an End-of-Year Review for one of our leaders. I had completely lost track of time and found myself breaking traffic laws to catch the second half of the meeting. Now, I color-code everything in my digital calendar and set a reminder notification on important events to avoid such mishaps.

TIP 2: PRIORITIZE RUTHLESSLY

Prioritizing is like choosing your battles with a toddler – some things are just not worth the fight.

Advice: Identify what’s most important at work and home, and focus your energy on those areas.

I used to attend almost every single work meeting until I realized that in some cases, I could simply receive an update via email. Saying "no" to less critical tasks has freed up time so I don’t have to bring work home and can read bedtime stories without the laptop glaring in the background.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried working while my kids play around me. Not effective. Over time, except for occasional events or emergencies, I’ve been able to set clear boundaries: work time in my office, and family time after 5 PM. Everyone understands and respects this, making life smoother.

TIP 6: MAKE QUALITY TIME COUNT

Quality time with your kids is like a gourmet meal – it’s all about the quality, not the quantity.

Advice: Plan special activities and dedicate uninterrupted time to engage with your children.

We have a nightly tradition where I go through a bible story with my kids before bed. It typically only lasts 10-15 minutes but has sparked some meaningful conversations and they look forward to it each night.

TIP 7: USE TECHNOLOGY WISELY

It’s no secret that technology is a double-edged sword – it can be both a time-saver and a distraction.

Advice: Use productivity apps to manage tasks but set limits on screen time to avoid distractions.  Now, I use productivity tools like Notion and Asana for task management and set strict screen time limits to help me stay focused.

I don’t know about you but I can easily spend at least an hour looking at videos and memes instead of working. Use features like “Do Not Disturb” on your devices to help minimize distractions and avoid interrupting you as you get work done. The same can be done while with friends and family. You can silence work notifications and schedule times to check those after the kids go to bed.

TIP 8: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Self-care is like the water in a watering can – you are constantly pouring yourself into areas of life that are important. The only way to sustain this is by replenishing your can. Simply put, you can’t give what you don’t have.

Advice: Prioritize your physical, emotional, and mental health by scheduling time for connecting with God, exercise, hobbies, and relaxation.

After repeatedly neglecting my health and feeling burned out, I started walking a couple of miles a day in the mornings. I’ve even tried fitness videos – it feels a little awkward at first but after a while I found myself getting into it and feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

TIP 9: COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY

Effective communication is like Harry Potter’s magic wand – it can help you combat the dark arts of conflict and create harmony.

Advice: Keep open lines of communication with your partner, children, and employer to manage expectations and responsibilities.

My wife and I once miscommunicated about who was picking up one of our kids – I ended up leaving and having to turn around to go back and pick up my son. It could have been worse, but now we’re intentional about making sure all plans are clearly communicated to avoid such mix-ups.

TIP 10: ACCEPT IMPERFECTION

Accepting imperfection is like embracing the chaos of fatherhood – it’s all part of the adventure.

Advice: Understand that you won’t always get it right and that’s okay. Learn from mistakes and move on.

One morning, I accidentally packed the knife I used to cut apples in my kid's snack bag. They were out of school so they came to work with me that day. In the middle of one of my staff meetings, they walked in saying, “Look, Daddy!” Somewhat embarrassed, I ushered them back to my office, apologized for the mistake, put the knife away, and went back to my meeting. We laughed about it later, and I realized perfection is overrated. What matters is being present and doing your best.
